Ways to Prioritize Your Heart Health During Heart Month

This month brings one of the most important aspects of our health to the forefront: our heart and cardiovascular system.  While we’re all aware that heart health is important, many don’t prioritize the habits necessary to maintain it, and this month can be a great time to start some new heart-healthy habits!

The winter may have left some of us reluctant to get out of the house, but it’s important to keep moving and exercise regularly to take care of our heart health.  The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week1, but every little bit helps!  Even something as simple as taking the stairs instead of waiting for an elevator makes a difference when it comes to your heart.  If you are not sure where to start, check out some of our past articles for some exercise recommendations and inspiration.

Many people are aware that exercise can help our hearts, but one of the simplest ways for us to be kinder to our hearts is to get enough sleep.  People who don’t get enough sleep are at higher risk of high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.  Most people should get at least 7 hours of quality sleep per night, and it is best to try and maintain a regular sleeping schedule so your body can establish a natural circadian rhythm.  Being properly rested can help to reduce stress, another risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and can help you be more productive throughout the day.2

Apart from these primary principles, it is important to make healthy lifestyle choices like staying hydrated, abstaining from smoking, and maintaining a healthy bodyweight.  However, it is just as important to have regular wellness visits with your doctor so they can review your vitals and make sure you are addressing your body’s needs.1 Being aware of any current risk factors, along with any congenital or hereditary conditions, can make all the difference when it comes to taking care of your heart and making sure it maintains a happy rhythm.
