New research shows that fitness facilities across the U.S. are seeing steady growth in attendance. In the first half of 2025, overall gym visits increased by 3.5%, with budget-friendly (HVLP) and mid-range gyms experiencing the strongest gains. Not only are more people visiting, but members are also showing up more often—average visit frequency rose 1.4% compared to last year.
In the first half of 2025, the strongest gains in gym traffic came from the budget and mid-tier segments of the market.
-
High-volume, low-price gyms (HVLP) — which include well-known brands such as Planet Fitness, Crunch, and EōS Fitness — posted a 3.8% increase in total visits. On average, each location recorded about 193,000 visits, marking the segment’s best start to a year on record.
-
Mid-priced gyms, including national names like Anytime Fitness, LA Fitness, and Gold’s Gym, weren’t far behind, seeing a 3.7% year-over-year rise in visits.
This growth trend points to the value-conscious mindset of many consumers. Even as inflation remains a concern, people continue to prioritize their health and fitness—choosing gyms that provide both affordability and effective results.
These findings come from the Fitness Industry Traffic (FIT) Tracker, a new recurring report from the Health & Fitness Association (HFA). The report, powered by Placer.ai and developed with Sports Marketing Surveys USA, compiles anonymized data from thousands of gyms, studios, and fitness clubs nationwide. It breaks down trends by facility type, region, and demographics to help operators and suppliers understand shifting consumer habits.
The first edition of the FIT Tracker highlights visitation trends from January through June 2025 and will continue to track seasonal changes, geographic differences, and demographic shifts in the months ahead.
Overall, the data suggests a bigger story: Americans are increasingly weaving structured workouts into their weekly routines.
HFA President and CEO Liz Clark noted that the rise in both visits and frequency underscores the role fitness facilities play in keeping people engaged with their health.
